How to Prepare Your Boat for Cold Weather
August 14, 2020

We hate to say it, but fall is on the way, which means cold weather is coming. We love to take our boats out on the lake all year, but for most boat-owners, when the cold weather hits, it’s time to put your boats away for the year. There is a lot of preparation for your boats during the colder seasons. It is imperative to winterize your boat correctly so you can protect your boat from moisture, freezing, or corrosion damage. Here is a checklist of everything you need to do before storing your boat for the winter.

  • Drain all freshwater tanks. Also, drain your heaters and winterize with non-toxic antifreeze. Make sure to winterize all other plumbing, including fresh and saltwater pumps and drains, air conditioning, refrigeration, all water-using appliances, washdown pumps, toilets, holding tanks, etc.
  • Remove batteries if your boat is stored on land.
  • Top off fuel tanks to minimize fuel contamination with water from condensation
  • Remove and properly store electronics that are not cabinet installed.
  • Install air treatment on board to help prevent the formation of mold and mildew.
  • Change engine oil and filter, lube, and gear oil. Make sure to run, and fog the engine, then drain the water from the engine.

Once all of the correct steps have been taken, make sure your boat is safely transported to winter storage. Taking preventive measures for the winter will make a smoother start to next season. Of course, it is still August, so you still have a few weeks to get your last boating adventures, but it is vital to have a plan since fall is quickly approaching.
